Exciting discussion before the vote
Last Thursday, the plenary session at Stiftsschule Engelberg became a political stage: just four days before the federal vote on the SRG initiative, two Engelberg politicians and alumni of our school debated in front of the students. Alex Höchli and Djordje Stevanovic met in the theater hall under the direction of the discuss it association.
Alex Höchli (Matura 1978), member of the Obwalden Cantonal Council and former valley mayor of Engelberg, argued against cuts to the SRG. His opponent was Djordje Stevanovic, who graduated from Stiftsschule in 2022, is now studying mathematics at ETH Zurich and is also a member of the Obwalden Cantonal Council. Stevanovic represented the position of the initiative’s supporters.
After a moderated exchange of facts and arguments, the students also had their say. The discussion with the two politicians was lively and showed how topical the issue is for the younger generation. In a final vote among those present, 79% of young people rejected the initiative, which shows that this age group also attaches great importance to nationwide, cross-lingual and high-quality radio and television.
Stiftsschule Engelberg would like to thank everyone involved – the discuss it association, the politicians and the students – for the exciting and enriching discussion.
