Panel discussion of the Angelomontana

A look behind the political scenes in Bern

On Thursday, 27 November, the student association of the Stiftsschule Engelberg, the Angelomontana, hosted a special panel event. Heinrich Christen welcomed former Federal Chancellor Walter Thurnherr to the stage for a discussion entitled: “A look behind the scenes of the Federal Council! How does Switzerland actually govern – and why does this system work so well?”

Thurnherr provided fascinating insights into how the Federal Council works and explained why Switzerland’s political system remains stable and functions reliably despite its complexity. Using numerous examples from his many years as Federal Chancellor, he demonstrated how decision-making processes take place in the background – factually, humorously and pointedly.

The interactive nature of the evening was particularly appreciated: Thurnherr repeatedly involved the audience, answered questions and encouraged discussion. In addition to the active members and many former Angelomontans, the guests included numerous Engelberg residents and former students of the Stiftsschule Engelberg.

It was an extremely entertaining and informative evening that impressively conveyed the uniqueness of the Swiss political system.
